Fences for weather protection
Almost everyone enjoys the opportunity to spend some quality time outdoors, as there's nothing quite like some sunshine and fresh air to lift the spirits. However, sometimes the elements don't comply with our needs and this is where practical choices in your type of fencing can make or break your outdoor experiences.
Fences to beat the weather
Where protection from the elements is the main concern, you will want to look at fence types that will allow you to utilise your outdoor space without having to deal with some of the less pleasant weather conditions. Wind is one of the biggest culprits here so a fence that doubles as a wind barrier is a wise choice in high wind areas. Some of the best options for weather protection are:
- Steel panel fences
- Stone and/or brick fences
- Bamboo fences
- Solid wood panel fences
- Glass fences
- Live fences
The thing is strength, so look at using materials that will stand up to all manner of weather conditions especially if your fence needs to withstand strong, gusty winds.
Choosing the right fence for weather protection
Your choice of fencing will largely depend on your situation. In most cases, people are looking for a good windbreak, so a fence to withstand strong winds would need to be constructed from the most suitable material for this application.
The fence would need to be solid and high enough to keep the wind out. Steel or wood panel fencing works very well here as it provides a solid barrier and it can still look very attractive at the same time. For the same reasons, a solid brick or stone fence will provide good protection from strong winds while enhancing the look of your outdoors with its stylish appeal.
Where the wind is more breezy than gusty, you may want to look at bamboo fencing for something a little different in stylish good looks. The outdoor version used thicker 18mm rods and manufactures suggest the use of a good sealant to protect it from the elements and maintain its looks.
Glass fencing panels will also give great protection from the weather and have the added advantage of preserving your view.
Live fences: Hedge plants
Another option that is often overlooked is the live fence. Live fences are created from hedge plants like box and, on larger properties, a thick line of foliage trees. Live fences offer very good protection from strong winds and windblown debris as they slow the wind speed quite dramatically and the fallen debris can mulch your fence.
Hedges used to be quite popular as dividing fences for their privacy qualities too and while they are not an instant solution, they are attractive and, once established, can provide you with privacy as well as protection from the vagaries of the weather.
